The fifth season of the American animated television series SpongeBob SquarePants, created by former marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg was announced on June 28, 2006, premiered on February 19, 2007, with the episodes "Rise and Shine," "Waiting," and "Sing a Song of Patrick." The whole season has aired 20 episodes. The season ended with "Goo Goo Gas," on July 19, 2009.
The season 5 DVDs were split by volume. The volume one DVD was released in Region 1 on September 4, 2007, the volume two DVD was released on November 18, 2008, and the season set was released entirely in Region 2 on November 16, 2009, and in Region 1 on November 13, 2012.

- The first season not to feature Goo Lagoon since its introduction in the first season.
- The first season where Plankton does not play a major role in the finale.
- However, "Stanley S. SquarePants" is the only episode in this season where Plankton appears but doesn't play a major role.
- This is also the only season for two things:
- The only season where Pearl does not appear.
- The only season in the post-movie era to not feature Goo Lagoon.
- This is the last season for a few things:
- The last season to use pencils for drawings.
- The last season to feature the original SpongeBob SquarePants logo.
- The last season to air during Nickelodeon's 1984-2009 splat era.
- The last season to date to consist of 20 half-hour episodes. The number of episodes for each season was changed to 26 with the following four seasons.
- This is one of the only seasons to have characters on title cards.
